Frequently Asked Questions
How do I setup my email account in
Outlook/Outlook Express?
Information on how to setup your email
accounts can be found
here.
What are the typical ports used for Internet
Service?
- FTP: 21
- Outbound Mail (SMTP): 25
- Inbound Mail (POP3):110
- HTTP: 80
- HTTPS: 443
What web statistics does Web in Motion offer
and how do I access them?
Web in Motion offers a very robust traffic
reporting system that can display a range of
information such as:
- Number of Hits/Visitors/Unique IP
addresses
- Bandwidth consumed (on a monthly basis)
- Top Entry/Exit pages
- Most common paths through the site
- Referring site stats (other sites and
search engines)
- Visits from Search Engines by keyword
WebStats can be viewed by visiting
www.mydomain.com/webstats
On the web stats page, what are total hits
and what are cached hits?
Total Hits = This is the total number
of hits during the reporting period. Each
traffic report page is for a calendar month.
One hit per each item on a page. So, if one
page has 10 graphics and text and all, it
may actually show up as 12+ hits.
Total Cached Hits = You can set your
browser to cache (or store on your PC for
quicker access) pages and then compare
what's in cache to what's on the server (by
file date). If the versions are the same,
the page is pulled from cache and not
downloaded. This would affect hits, file
downloads, data transferred and page views.
On the web stats page, what are uniq IP's?
Every device (PC, server, some network
equipment, etc.) connected to a network or
the Internet has what is called an IP
address. It's similar to a house with a
street address - it identifies you so that
traffic is properly routed. If a person
wants to view a website, they make a request
to the server where the website resides. The
server knows where to send back the data
because it has the IP address of the
requester. The reason Uniq IP's is included
on the web stats is that it can help you get
a better picture of traffic to the site.
Many offices share an Internet connections
among it's employees. An office of 10 or 100
often go out over the same DSL. In these
cases, each person shares only one IP
address for Internet traffic. So if all 100
people in the office viewed the same site,
it would appear to the site that it was
being visited by only one person. Obviously,
this can skew traffic statistics since all
100 people would appear as 1 visitor when
based solely off of IP address. This is why
you will see a visitors section - this is a
more accurate judge of unique visitors to
the site. However, Uniq IPs can be useful to
you - the difference between this and
Visitors can tell you roughly how many
visitors are coming from sites with multiple
people (usually offices, although even homes
can have multiple PCs sharing one Internet
connection).
How do I list my site with the
search engines?
Search Engine Registration is a simpler task
than most realize. Before you register your
site, you'll want to make sure you've
included "META tags" in your site. These
allow many search engines to scan and
categorize your site and its content. In the
<HEAD> section of your main page, include
something like what is included in the
example below:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type"
CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="title" content="Web in Motion -
TITLE OF THIS PAGE">
<meta name="description"
content="DESCRIPTION OF THIS SITE">
<meta name="keywords" content="PLACE SOME
KEYWORDS HERE THAT DESCRIBE YOUR SITE">
<meta name="ratings" content="general">
<meta name="ROBOTS" content="ALL">
<meta name="COPYRIGHT" Content="© 2009 Web
in Motion"></head>
Nearly every search engine "crawls" the
Internet looking for new sites to catalog.
Typically, to register your site with a
search engine, you can simply wait for the
various search engines to find your site and
catalog it. Most search engines allow you
request that your site be cataloged, but
doing so does not actual speed up the
process.
Once you have submitted your site, it can
take several weeks or even months for your
site to be included. Submitting your site
does not mean you will be highly ranked. In
most cases your site will not appear in the
100 sites for a particular keyword without
search engine optimization.

Bing Submission
Yahoo Submission
Ask.com Submission
What is a URL
Universal Resource Locator. Put simply, it
is your website such as http://www.yourdomain.com
What is a domain
a domain is your "DOT com" name. For
example, the Web in Motion domain is "webinmotion.com".
What do I use FTP for
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a way to
"upload" and "download" files to your
website. Typically, FTP is used to transfer
files from your computer to your website
whenever you've made updates to your
website. Microsoft's SharePoint Designer (or
Frontpage for older versions) and Adobe
Contribute are tools many use to develop and
maintain their website. Both have a built in
FTP program that allows you to save your
pages to your site without having to use an
external FTP program.
How do I access my webmail
Visit
http://email.webinmotion.com. Webmail is
secure, so you are safe to use it whether
you access it at home or at any area
hotspot. Once you are at the login screen
supply the username and password you were
issued by Web in Motion to access the
Webmail "interface" so that you can view and
respond to emails. Please note that if you
have setup your email client (like Outlook
Express) to download your messages to your
PC (which is the default setting), your
previously retrieved messages will not be
visible through WebMail. All WebMail
messages older than 30 days are
automatically removed from the server. |
